Chapter Five

Brad’s phone chimed at 8am.

“Yo. Hey Kev, what’s up?”

“I’m walking to the hospital. I have a spring in my step and a smile on my face. Thought I’d share my good mood with you.”

“I assume things went well with Dani.”

“I don’t know how I’m gonna get through my 18-hour shift without seeing her. Do you know she’s an R.N.?

“No. What’s she doing answering phones?”

“She believes in the organization and she wanted a break because she’s considering med-school. Can it get any better than that?”

“I’m happy for you Kev. Sorry, if I don’t sound too enthused but my crush on Ginger is turning into something else.”

“Do tell Brad.”

“I will but for now daydream about Dani and I’ll let you know if I need help.”

“O.k. dude. I’ll call you when I emerge from my nightmare shift at the hospital. Are you doing alright Brad?”

“Totally fine Kevin. I haven’t taken a painkiller of anti-anxiety drug in a few months. I realized that I was relying on them just before I had a major problem. A car backfired last night and I nearly jumped out of my skin but I survived.”

“Cool. By the way, Brad. When it comes to self-medicating, there’s no such thing as a minor problem. I’m proud of you man.”

Brad laid in his bed and put on jazz music, which always helped him relax. It was his alternative to popping pills, which Brad very briefly did to mask the horrors of war. The primitive grinding of instruments led to a smooth mellow conclusion. It was like witnessing death and destruction leading to a normal life. He was feeling good except one image kept popping in his head. He thought of Dennis’ book in which he gives a dying man’s message to his lovely sister. He pictured the photo of Dennis grief stricken as he sat in the sunshine. Brad closed his eyes as Miles Davis went off on his trumpet. He sat up ramrod straight in his bed.

“Raids don’t take place on a sunny day!” Brad screamed.

He knew there was something off about the Dennis Portowski. What began as a crush on Ginger Hess had become so much more. His feelings for Ginger were still intact but before anything else, he had to expose a liar. Being a member of the US military was an honor and anyone who didn’t treat it as such had to be exposed. Brad realized that he had flaws but he had never lied in a uniform. He thought of all the records in the Pentagon and with the help of Major Jen Keiswether, he might be able to get what he needed. Major K was one of the librarians. There were hundreds but he considered her a friend. He grabbed his phone and after speaking to three operators, he got a hold of her.

“Major Keiswether. This is Sergeant Brad Tucker, US Navy SEAL.”

“Yes Brad, let’s dispense with the formalities. Call me Major K, what can I do for you?”

“First of all thanks for taking my call on a weekend,” Brad said.
